The culture of therapy

In many communities, but especially ones of color, therapy has a stigma with the overall tone being, you just don’t go. There are many factors that contribute to this stigma, they include:

access, privacy, trust & loyalty and generational narratives.

Life Coaching

For individuals seeking coaching, you and your Oasis Center Coach will identify specific goals that enhance your cognitive (thinking) skills and overall well-being.

Companion services

From changes in our work environments, and increased isolation, to a decrease in social interactions and physical touch. These are only a few of the impacts to our quality of life since the start of the pandemic. Many faced unexpected changes that required a balance of mental, physical, and emotional stability. But even with great effort, some individuals still experienced a decline in their mental health.

The Culture of Therapy

In many communities, but especially ones of color, therapy has a stigma with the overall tone being, you just don’t go.

There are many factors that contribute to this stigma, they include:

Access to a therapist who validates your cultural, emotional, financial, social, spiritual, religious, sexual, and experiential self.

Privacy is seen as a form of safety; to share, is to invite vulnerability, threat, and/or danger.

Trust & Loyalty to the communities you identify with and a lack thereof in the people providing therapy.

Generational narratives or stories that reinforce or invalidate problematic behavior and its effects or consequences. Often rooted in survival, fear, safety, or self-preservation.

These influences can manifest in emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and sometimes physical symptoms.

A Closer Look

Mental health involves bringing awareness to the barriers in our lives and responding in ways that increase our ability to function. Therapy may support you in understanding your experiences and their influences on:

  1. Actions

  2. Emotions

  3. Interpersonal relationships

  4. Abnormal thoughts or perceptions

Symptoms that influence the way we think, feel, and interact with ourselves and the world around us, warrant a closer look.

The OC goal is to empower you to be your fullest self while feeling safe enough to do so. Whether you’re an individual, couple, or an undefined unit, the Oasis Center welcomes you. Let’s Journey Together!
